Wednesday evening the audience at the Aronoff Center was treated to one of the most wildly popular singing groups on the planet, Celtic Woman. Brought together in 2005, these Irish singers have made their name performing both classic and contemporary songs, brilliantly arranged by their young and talented director/conductor, David Downes. Celtic Woman can often be seen on the PBS network around the holidays and funding campaigns.
The group has undergone some changes in recent years with the departure of the popular and hauntingly traditional Irish vocalist and harpist, Orla Fallon. But the core group has remained intact with Lisa Kelly, whose pure voice, passion and graceful stage presence can bring forth long-hidden emotions from even the most restrained heart. Lisa is a veteran performer of Riverdance and theater. Her rendition of the song “May it Be” from the movie “Lord of the Rings” is both powerful and beautiful. Chloë Agnew, teenage singing sensation and maybe the most versatile vocalist in the group also tugs at the heartstrings as she performs classics such as “Ave Maria.” And Máiréad Nesbitt, the beautiful little pixie who is actually a classically trained violinist provides all the energy the group needs. She is equally at home playing a bright jig as she flits across the stage or a familiar melody such as “Shenandoah” and the audience watches in reverence.
A newcomer to the group, Lynn Hilary has replaced the popular Méav who has retired to pursue a solo career and spend more time with her family. Other members include Haley Westenra and Alex Sharpe. Clearly, Celtic Woman hasn’t lost a step with these new ladies. The five present at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati Wednesday night were Lisa, Chloë, Máiréad, Alex and Lynn. The beautiful Irish countryside just keeps producing these amazingly talented vocalists and we’re all the better for it. They are currently touring the United States so check their schedule on their website. May you be at their next concert a half hour before the devil knows you’re there!”
