Celtic Woman discover Irish luck
By MARK DANIELL -- For JAM! Music

Celtic Woman

TORONTO - As a cluster of publicists iron out a non-stop day of promotion, Irish singing ensemble Celtic Woman are in a second-floor lounge at the Metropolitan Hotel trying to figure out how to squeeze a quick trip to the Betsey Johnson boutique in Yorkville before jetting off to Boston.

"Everyone who interviews us is always looking for the dirt, trying to find out if we have a whole 'Desperate Housewives' scenario going on," the group's fiddle player Máiréad Nesbitt says, pouring a glass of Evian. "But, really, we get on great."

Packaged as a one-off show that was filmed at the Helix in Dublin, Ireland, for a PBS television special in 2004, Celtic Woman's self-titled debut was released the year following, spending close to two years at the top of Billboard's World Music chart.

Celtic Woman, which is the brainchild of "Riverdance" musical director David Downes, was supposed to be a one-night affair whose primary purpose was to shine a light on Ireland's rising stage stars - Chloë Agnew, Órlagh Fallon, Lisa Kelly, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, with a little help from Nesbitt's fiddle playing thrown in for good measure. But after a performance where the songs ranged from the Irish classic "Danny Boy" to the operatic "Ave Maria" to contemporary balladry like "You Raise Me Up," the ladies say something magical took place.

"The first time we were onstage at the Helix was only the second time we were performing all together, but it just seemed to click," Kelly says. "We don't understand it," she adds, looking at Máiréad, "it just happened."

The 90-minute PBS show a hit, Celtic Woman got the Vegas treatment, mounting a tightly choreographed reworking of their first-ever performance for a globe-spanning trek that has yet to dock.

Three chart-topping albums later, the girls are in North America for their fifth jaunt, this time in support of "A New Journey," a second live recording that was filmed at Ireland's storied Slane Castle in August of last year.

Again a mixture of contemporary ballads like Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli's "The Prayer" and standards such as "Beyond the Sea," which was made popular by Bobby Darin, the girls' brand of musical theatre was given a stamp of approval by fans in their home country when Celtic Woman were invited to play at Slane, a venue usually reserved for hometown heroes, U2.

"Playing Slane, is a huge, huge honour," Kelly says. "Then of course there's Radio City Music Hall in New York," she laughs, tucking a strand of her strawberry-brown hair behind her ear.

"It was quite a shock for us 'cause Slane is associated with the whole rock gig thing," Máiréad adds. "But our set was built as an extension of the castle, so there's a sense of mysticism that comes out in the show."

Number one in over half-a-dozen countries, Máiréad takes a sip from her glass, and then says she knows the reason Celtic Woman have taken off instantaneously. "I have a theory on why we click and why this show works," she grins, pointing to herself.

"It's because there's no competition between us. We're all from very different genres of music. And because the show is broken up in different ways, our different personalities end up complimenting one another."

With a new member joining the ranks, New Zealand's Hayley Westenra, the sextet, will spend much of 2007 on the road before thinking about what comes next.

And with Vegas a logical extension for their brand of musical extravagance, you'd think that the ladies might have a glitzy city they'd like to call home in the near future.

"It's only been two years since the first DVD," Máiréad gasps. "Since then, it's been non-stop. So, we really haven't had a chance to think much beyond next month, let alone next year."

"Celtic Woman: A New Journey" is in stores now.

Here are Celtic Woman's upcoming Canadian dates:

June 15 Toronto, ON Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts

June 16 Montreal, QC Place Des Arts

June 17 Ottawa, ON National Arts Centre
